Kapa Haka - Distinction Can Do #7

Kapa Haka - On Friday the year 4 - 8 students had kapa haka. Once the year 7/8 students had been released from class I grabbed my poi on the way out and started walking over to the hall foyer. Once I got to the hall foyer I took my shoes off and sat them down on a seat. Once I had done this I walked into the hall and just stood there as I didn't know what was happening. Suddenly Mr Brown called out to us that we were to sit in our lines facing the stage. This is weird because we usually sit facing the side of the hall. The first song we started singing was Ka Wiata, everyone already new this song as we sing it in Te Reo lessons. After this we started going through Tenei Matau. Once we went through this once we realised that we ahd all forgotten the actions to this new song. After this Matua went through all of the actions with us again as he had noticed that most people had forgotten them. The care value that I showed during kapa haka was ecxellence as I never gave up whilst we were learning the actions.

WALT - I can take action to improve the water cycle in Canterbury

I can take action to improve the water cycle in Canterbury!

In this project I was working with Samara, Isabella and Xanthe and we decided to create a TV ad about the water cycle.

In this project we decided that our success criteria were: Kept simple, Memorable and effective, Length is flexible, but keep it brief, Humor, If you're not funny, don't make a jokey video.

Overall our project met this criteria because we stuck to our original plan.

WALT - apply the techniques of improvisation to a range of different scenarios.

Improvisation techniques that I have used successfully are always saying yes and accepting.

One improvisation technique that I would like to have more practice at is trusting myself as I am not very confident onstage.

The thing that I enjoyed most about this unit of learning was watching other people get up onstage and add to the scene like they had been doing it their whole life because, this way I didn't have to go up I just got to watch and it was very impressive to watch.

The thing that I found most challenging during this unit of learning was getting up onstage because I don't like performing in front of other people.

My favourite improvisation game was what are you doing because this way I got to have a chance onstage but I didn't have to stay up there for too long.

My next step/something I need to work on further in improvisation is getting up onstage because I hated doing this at the start of our sessions but I got better at it as we kept progressing.

Librarian - Distinction Can Do #6

Librarian - On Monday Sam W, Monique and I were rostered on to do librarian. Once the bell for lunch rang we all walked outside. After this we chose two books and then we walked down to the junior area. Once we were all there Monique and I started walking around and asking the juniors if they wanted to come and listen to a book. Sam W had already started her book by the time we got back.We all sat down and listened to her read. After she had read her book it was my turn some juniors tried to sit on my lap whilst I was reading but we got them off and then I started reading. Once I had finished reading we left. As we started walking back to the library the juniors started to follow us. We asked them to leave but they didn't so we said they could walk back to the library with us and then they had to go back to the junior area. Once we had put our books away the bell rang so the juniors went back to class anyways. The care value that I showed this week was showing respect to others as I had to let the little kids down gently when they kept trying to follow us back to class.

Technology - Distinction Must Do #4

Technology - Today the year 7/8's had technology. As soon as I got to school the teachers opened the door to the classroom so I got to go in straight away. The teachers asked our bus (bus 1) to go and line up first. Afterwards they asked bus 2 to go and line up. Sam W and I didn't care where we sat on the bus so we just lined up at the back of the line. After this I walked down to the back of the bus and sat with Sam W. I sat next to the window and she sat next to the aisle. On the way there the noise level was very good as I could easily hear the person next to me and most people were whispering. On the way back I sat with Sam W and I sat next to the window and she sat next to the aisle. On the way back the noise level was good as people were only talking to the person besides them. I think that I showed the value of Respect as I only talked to the person beside me and I made sure that I was talking at a good volume.

Koru Games - Distinction Must Do #3

Koru Games - On Tuesday to Thursday the year 7/8 students were all invloved in a three day tornament called Koru Games. The activity I did was Netball. Two highlights were, when I went for one intercept and missed and then sprinted back and got the second pass against Rawhiti and, when our team came sixth overall. I am proud of when I went for one intercept and missed and then sprinted back and got the second pass against Rawhiti, because this took lots of effort and lots of people recognized me for it. Some advice I would say to next years year 7's is to never give up because as long as you have fun and know that you tried your best that's all that matters.

These performances include the Oaklands school gala and the Oaklands school prizegiving. After they had talked to us about this they introduced two new songs to us that we would be singing at our upcoming performances. The first song the introduced was Ka Wiata, everyone already new this song as we sing it in Te Reo lessons. After this they introduced a new song which I can't remember the name of. Once we had been through this new song and learnt the words we started on the actions. We only got through half of the actions as kapa haka was about to finish and we hadn't finished going through the song with the actions.

Kapa Haka - Distinction Can Do #2

Kapa Haka (Cultural Festival) - On Tuesday the year 4-8 students in kapa haka had their performance in cultural festival. As we arived we were all very nervous and excited. After a while Mrs Baker told all of the year 8 girls that they had to go and put on some headbands and earings for the show. Once we had put these on the teachers took us inside and sat us down in some seats in the audience. We watched a lot of schools do their perfromances for the cultural festival, all these groups were very good which made me even more nervous. After a while Mr Brown led us out to backstage. On the way there we all dropped our stuff and left it in te foyer so that we didn't loose it. After this we went backstage. Whilst we were backstage we were all very nervous as we were about to go onstage. After this some staff came over and started taking us to the entrance onto the stage. Once we took the stage all of my nerves escaped me and I started to really enjoy the perfromance. Our first song was hareruia this was a nice simple song to start off with as it is a very simple song to sing and it looks very sharp when we perform it. After this we went into tahurihuri, I was very relieved to know that I didn't muck up in this song as I was doing the poi and this is very nerveraking for me. After this we did our school waita and then the haka. Once we had perfromed the teachers let us go as long as we had been seen by one of them before we left.

Kapa Haka - Distinction Can Do #1

Kapa Haka - On Monday Sam W, Samara, Monique and I were meant to do librarian. As we were only two days away from performaning at cultral festival Mr Brown called a practise so that we could practise coming off and on the stage. Once we had been released from class I grabbed my poi on the way out and started walking over to the hall foyer. Once I got to the hall foyer I took my shoes off and sat them down on a seat. After this I walked into the hall and saw that we were sitting in our lines for hareruia once I had seen this I went and sat down with them. After this Mr Brown and Mrs Baker came in and started organising us into lines on each side of the hall. Once they had done this we practised coming onto the stage quietly and by staying in line. After this we practised coming off the stage in the same way. We practised this a few times untill we had done it nicely without talking and by staying in line. After this we practised our whole routine a few times and then had a talk about whats going to happen on the night of Cultral Festival. I think that I showed the care value of excellence as I never gave up the whole time whilst we were practising coming on and off the stage and while we were practising our routine.

Technology - Distinction Must Do #1

Technology - Today the year 7/8's had technology. As soon as I got to school the teachers opened the door to the classroom so I got to go in straight away. The teachers asked our bus (bus 1) to go and line up first. Afterwards they asked bus 2 to go and line up. After this I walked down to the back of the bus and sat with Samara. I sat next to the window and she sat next to the aisle. On the way there the noise level was very good as I could easily hear the person next to me and most people were whispering. On the way back I sat with Jack W and I sat next to the window and he sat next to the aisle. On the way back the noise level was good as people were only talking to the person besides them. I think that I showed the value of displaying all care values to the public as I made sure I was being polite to everyone around me.

Technology - Distinction Must Do #2

Technology -  Today the year 7/8's had technology. As Samara and I went to the radio room to put the flags out we realised that the teachers were taking a staff photo and the radio room was locked, so we waited in the hall foyer until the teachers came out. Before the teachers came out the 8:30 bell rang so we had to go back to class to make sure we weren't late for the bus. Once we got back we waited a while and then the teachers came and opened the doors so we could go inside and do the roll  and get ready. The teachers asked bus 2 to go and line up first. Afterwards they asked our bus (bus 1) to go and line up. Once we had walked over to the bus I managed to hop on as one of the first people and get a seat at the back of the bus. On the way there I sat next to the window and Samara sat next to the aisle. On the way there the noise level was very good as I could easily hear the person next to me and most people were whispering. On the way back I sat next to the window and Samara sat next to the aisle again. On the way back the noise level was good as people were only talking to the person besides them. I think that I showed the value of displaying all care values to the public as I made sure I was being polite to everyone around me.

Care - My progress so far

CARE My progress so far

The CARE award that I am working towards is my silver.

The one area of CARE that I am doing best in is excellence because the teachers always notice me trying to do my best.

The one area of CARE that I need to work harder in is active thinking because I don;t contribute to class and group discussions as much as I should.

To show my leadership qualities I am a role model to others in the CARE values by doing/showing these leadership traits - Resilience, trustworthy and motivational.

On the CARE SOLO matrix below I am at this SOLO level extended abstract because I can constantly show my care values and role model how to use them to younger students.
