I can apply my knowledge of adverbial clauses and connectives to see how ideas are linked in texts.

I can apply my knowledge of adverbial clauses and connectives to see how ideas are linked in texts.

For reading I have been learning about adverbial clauses. I have found this learning challenging because I have had to think hard about how to do this and use the internet to help me figure this out.

In this activity (link to adverbial clause activity), I had to change and add to sentences to show that I understand how to use adverbial clauses.

I can recognise and understand a variety of grammatical constructions and some rhetorical patterns

WALT - I can recognise and understand a variety of grammatical constructions and some rhetorical patterns.

In this unit I have been learning about:
  • The parts of speech.
  • The types of nouns.
  • The types of sentences.

In this unit, I found challenging trying to remember all of the different types of names for nouns.

Something new I learnt was how to put these nouns into sentnces.

Evaluating Author's purpose

In reading we have been learning to make decisions about the usefulness of the text for the purpose, by using a variety of criteria to evaluate.

We read a range of texts and  evaluated them against four key criteria.
These were:
  • Readability
  • Accuracy
  • Relevance
  • Quality of information/ language.

Here is my evidence to show that I am able to demonstrate this reading skill. Evaluating Authors Purpose

I have a large vocabulary that is connected to my own knowledge about the world.

Year 9/10: I have a large vocabulary that is connected to my own knowledge about the world.

Definitions
Void: an empty space or vacuum.

Fluorescent: able to give off visible light after being exposed to a source of heat, light, or other form of energy

Vulnerable: able to be hurt or injured

Interconnected: to connect or cause to be connected one to the other or others.

Seldom: not often; rarely.

Example/Non Example
Is a void messy? Why or why not?
Now because it's just an empty space which nobody puts stuff in.
Which color is the most fluorescent at night? Why?
Green because you can still see it after the effect has worn off.
Why are elderly people more vulnerable than children? Why?
Because they are more fragile than us as they don't have the ability to move as fast as us.
Which is more interconnected; a vine or a dandelion? Why?
A vine because it is connected to a tree and the other vines.
Which is more seldom; the Olympics or an election in NZ? Why?
The Olympics because it is every four years and elections can happen every three years.

Word Associations
The plants in the garden are die during a frost
Vulnerable
There were lots of different paths that joined each other
Interconnected
I made a shot from halfway while facing backwards.
Seldom
We are still exploring  outer space.
Void
I can find my key ring easily in the dark.
Fluorescent

Word Relationships

How might each pair of words be connected?
Vulnerable/Fluorescent
They are connected because if you are vulnerable you have to be careful of what might happens which means it may only happen rarely and if something is fluorescent it only happens a few times.
Void/interconnected
They are connected because you could be connected to something in the empty space and if you are interconnected then you are connected to something.

Extended Writing
Think of a time when you felt as though you were in a void or when you saw something that happens seldom. Write a paragraph about this.
Once I was walking past a basketball court and I saw someone shooting from the other end of the court and they got it in. It was so cool and when I tried my ball didn't even hit the hoop. When I got home that day I would keep going to the basketball court trying to get it in but I never did.

I can describe the structure of a Short Story

Something I have learned about the structure of short stories is that there is always an outcome to the problem in the story.

After reading some short stories two things I will remember when I write my own short story are that there is always a problem no matter how small the problem is and you need to include a setting.

WALT - I can evaluate writers’ purposes and consider how they have used structure and language to suit these purposes. (Eg: I can make decisions about why the writer has written a piece of writing and how they have used particular structures and words to meet the purpose.)

Our task was to read three school journals and do our follow up sheet which I linked below. I think we achieved extended abstract because we completed our follow up to a high standard. My next step is to get a teacher conference with the teacher.
This is my reading follow up I did with Samara

WALT - I can evaluate the overall arguments and make an informed decision

WALT - I can evaluate the overall arguments and make an informed decision.
While we were doing this task I think I did well because I contributed ideas to our group discussion, and I tried to think outside the box whilst we were reading our texts.

I can gather, evaluate, and synthesis information across a small range of texts

Overall the evidence for this side is strong because we got all our evidence from sites online and triangulated our answers, to make sure they were right.

Overall the evidence for this side is uncertain because all of the information hasn’t got enough evidence to prove that the flag should stay.

WALT - I can apply some criteria to evaluate texts (e.g. accuracy of information; presence of bias.)

This is my reading follow up from my last group - it is about Disneyland.
I think that I got to relational because I can evaluate further on my topics.
My next step is to sit down with a teacher and discuss what my next reading goal is.

This is my entry and exit ticket, we fill these in at the start and end of a group.
