I can apply my knowledge of adverbial clauses and connectives to see how ideas are linked in texts.

For reading I have been learning about adverbial clauses. I have found this learning challenging because I have had to think hard about how to do this and use the internet to help me figure this out.

In this activity (link to adverbial clause activity), I had to change and add to sentences to show that I understand how to use adverbial clauses.

The Water Cycle

The Water Cycle is a process that water goes through between land, sea and atmosphere. The water will continually change state throughout this cycle, the three changes of state are liquid, gas and a solid. The water is always getting recycled throughout this process as it keeps getting reused as it goes around the cycle continually. The four steps in the water cycle include: evaporation, condensation, precipitation and groundwater/runoff.

Evaporation
One of the steps in the water cycle is evaporation; evaporation is when the sun heats up the oceans and the ocean gets so hot that it evaporates and turns into a gas, this gas is called water vapour. Evaporation is an invisible process which changes liquid into a gas (also known as water vapour). Once this has happened the sun draws the water vapour up to the sky and then becomes a cloud (condensation). On hot days the chance of evaporation is greater as the sun is brighter and has a better chance of breaking the water molecules up which then evaporates. Water vapour is also known as humidity. In warm places there is a lot of humidity as the chance of heating the water is greater. The step after evaporation is condensation as once the water has evaporated it turns into a cloud, this cloud is called condensation.

Condensation/Precipitation
Condensation/precipitation is when water vapour forms into a cloud and then falls in many different ways and becomes part of runoff. Once the water has evaporated it floats up to the sky and then the gas forms a cloud, which is called condensation. Condensation happens because of the temperature. As warmer air contains a lot of water vapour whilst colder air contains less water vapour. Once a cloud has gathered as much water vapour as it can it has to release it somehow the cloud releases this gas by changing state the state that it changes to is a liquid. The cloud can release this water in four different ways! Rain, hail, snow and sleet. Once this water has fallen it all ends up in one place this place is called runoff.

Runoff/Groundwater
Runoff/Ground-water is when water runs off the land surface by going through rivers and ending up in lakes/oceans. This water is usually nothing more than water you use to drink. Most runoff flows downhill (due to gravity). This water will eventually come to an end by reaching a lake/ocean, and then goes through this process again. The water that doesn't go into runoff soaks into the ground and becomes part of our groundwater. There are two stages of groundwater, the first stage is water storage and the second stage is groundwater flow. Once the water has soaked into the ground it becomes part of water storage and then becomes part of groundwater flow this water will eventually flow out towards the lakes/oceans which will then go through this process again.

Overall there are four main steps of the water cycle. During the water cycle the water is continually recycled as it goes through each step of the cycle. There are three main states of the water during the water cycle; liquid, solid and a gas. The water cycle is very a very important and crucial process for the world's survival.

Kapa Haka - Excellence Can Do #20

Kapa Haka - On Friday the year 4 - 8 students had kapa haka. Once the year 7/8 students had been released from class I grabbed my poi on the way out and started walking over to the hall foyer. Once I got to the hall foyer I took my shoes off and sat them down on a seat. After this I walked into the hall and saw that we were sitting in our lines for hareruia once I had seen this I went and sat down with them. Once I sat down matua said that we should start singing he honore so we could warm up. After this Mr Brown anounced that we were going to be performaning to an audience. The group that came to watch was the year 4/5 and 6's. Once we had performed our whole routine to them the gave us some feedback. Most of them said things that they liked about our routine, but the teachers gave us some feedback on how we could improve. After this another group came in and watched us perform. They gave us some more feedback, they told us what they liked about our routine and then left so that we had time to practise our routine as this is our last practise. We practised our whole routine a few times and then had a talk about whats going to happen on the night of Cultral Festival. I think that I showed the care value of excellence as I never gave up the whole time throughout our performance to the year 4/5/6's.

WALT - I can recognise and understand a variety of grammatical constructions and some rhetorical patterns.

In this unit I have been learning about:
  • The parts of speech.
  • The types of nouns.
  • The types of sentences.

In this unit, I found challenging trying to remember all of the different types of names for nouns.

Something new I learnt was how to put these nouns into sentnces.

Fundraising for Wellington - Excellence Can Do #19

Fundraising for Wellington - On Monday I couldn't do Librarian because I had been choosen to go and walk around the Halswell shops and the Riccarton mall. My mum had offered to drive Sam W, Monique, Alicia and I so we could have a supervisor. We left school at 12:40 so that we would arrive back by 3:00. Firstly we went to te Halswell shops. We walked around in pairs as this way we would cover more ground. I went with Alicia and we went to a hairdressing salon near New World which gave us a voucher for a free cut and blow dry. After this we went into New World and asked them, we weren't so successful here as the owner of the store wasn't there today, but we did get an email address which we could contact later. After this we went down to the butcher. We didn't get anything here but did leave a notice for the owner once he came back. Once we had finished asking around Halswell we went to Riccarton mall. Whilst we were here Sam W and Monique managed to get some spot prizes from Noel Leemings. Alicia and I also got successful when we went to jb-hi-fi as we got a gift voucher from them as well. After this we went back to school and arrived just on time for the 3:00 bell. I think that I showed the value of Excellence as I kept going even though some shops turned us down.

Kapa Haka - Excellence Can Do #18

Kapa Haka - Today (Friday) the year 4 - 8 students had kapa haka. Kapa haka started early today as Mrs Baker and Mr Brown wanted us to practice for the cultural festival. Once the year 7/8 students had been released from class I grabbed my poi on the way out and started walking over to the hall foyer. Once I got to the hall foyer I took my shoes off and sat them down on a seat. After this I walked into the hall and saw that we were sitting in our lines for hareruia (this is unusual as we usually sit in our Tai Tapu lines at the start of kapa haka). Once I sat down matua said that we should start singing he honore so we could warm up. I haven't sung this song for ages but it all came back to me as we started to sing it. Once we had done this Mr Brown and Mrs Baker came in and we started going through our whole cultural festival routine. After this Mr Brown had a huge talk to us about being respectful and loud during our performance as we are only two weeks away from performing at cultural festival. Once he had said this we had some visitors (Mrs Martin and Mrs Hall). They watched our whole performance from the start and said that it was great! Once they had left the teachers said that we were going to start issuing our uniforms for cultural festival. I think that I showed the care value of excellence as I never gave up the whole time throughout our performance to Mrs Martin and Mrs Hall.

Kapa Haka - Excellence Can Do #17

Kapa Haka - Today the year 4 - 8 students had kapa haka. Kapa haka started early today as Mrs Baker wanted us to practise for the cultral festival. Once the year 7/8 students had been released from class I grabbed my poi on the way out and started walking over to the hall foyer. Once I got to the hall foyer I took my shoes off and put the down on a seat. I quietly walked into the hall as they had already started talking about the cultral festival. As I entered I sat down and started listening to Matua. We started mucking around and singing songs with Matua as Mrs Baker hadn't arrived yet and Mr Brown wasn't at school today. Once Mrs Baker arrived we started talking about the cultral festival again. After this they asked us to go through Hareruia as they wanted to see our lines for this song. Once they had watched us go through it once they sat the year 4's and year 7/8's down as they wanted to change around the lines. Once they had done this we all got back into position and got used to our new lines. Our new lines were good as our line had more people and was easier to move with. After we had practised enough with our new lines we started to go through our whole performance but once we got to Tahurhuri Matua stopped us because he wanted to see who could do the flash poi out of the year 5 and 6's. Once he had seen this he changed these lines around aswell and kept stopping throughout the song so that the year 5/6's could get used to it. After this we went through our whole routine a few times and then the year 7/8's got released as we didn't have to ptactise anything else. I think that I showed the care value of respect as I was respecting the fact that the lines had changed and I just had to get used to it.

Librarian - Excellence Can Do #16

Librarian - On Monday Sam W, Monique, Samara and I were rostered on to do librarian. Once the bell for lunch rang we all walked outside and then started running as it was raining. Once we got to the library we decided to choose a book and then wait for the rain to stop. The rain eventually stopped but I took a while so we only had time for two books. We walked down to the junior area. Once we were all there Samara and I started walking around and asking the juniors if they wanted to come and listen to a book. A lot of juniors did as they had nothing to do because it was raining. Sam W had already started her book by the time we got back. We all sat down and listened to her read. After she had read her book it was my turn some juniors tried to sit on my lap whilst I was reading but we got them off and then I started reading. Once I had finished reading we left. As we started walking back to the library the juniors started to follow us. We asked them to leave but they didn't so we said they could walk back to the library with us and then they had to go back to the junior area. Once we had put our books away the bell rang so the juniors went back to class anyways. The care value that I showed this week was showing respect to others as I had to let the little kids down gently when they kept trying to follow us back to class.

Kapa Haka - Excellence Can Do #15

Kapa Haka - Today the year 4 - 8 students had kapa haka. On the way out of class the year 7/8 girls had to grab their long poi. After I had grabbed my poi I started walking over to the hall with the other year 7/8 students. Once I got to the hall foyer I took my shoes off and raced into the hall as they had already started.  Once I sat down in my line ready for Hareruia Mrs Baker and Mr Brown talked to us about how much time we had left and that we weren't doing as well as we could be. Once he had had this talk to us we all started to lift our volume and make sure we were doing really well. We sung really well during Hareruia but when we went into Tahurihuri it got worse as we were too focused on our actions (my actions were poi) and not focused on singing loud enough. We went through this song twice before Matua, Mr Brown and Mrs Baker were happy with our performance. After this we went into Tai Tapu (our school song). We were doing really well in this song as we all practice this everyday for our whanau hui. We did this song twice as Matua thought that we were off pitch the first time we went through it. Once we had done this Mrs Baker asked us to sit down in regards to our permission slips for the Cultural festival. I got to leave as my name got called out as I was one of the people that had already returned their permission slip. I think that I showed the care value of trying your best because once the teachers had asked us to lift our volume I did and I keep lifting it throughout the whole song.

Librarian - Excellence Can Do #14

Librarian - On Monday Sam W, Monique, Samara and I were scheduled to do librarian. But at the start of the day we heard a notice which told us that the library wasn't open at lunch as there was training for all the librarians at lunch. So at lunchtime all four of us walked down to the library so we could find out what was happening. It turned out that Mrs Ward (the librarian) had wanted all of the librarians in the library so that we could learn about a new website she had set up for the whole school. Mrs Pattern was also there as she had set up the whole website for Mrs Ward. All four of us sat down with the other librarians. Once we were seated Mrs Ward called Ariel so that she knew who was there and who wasn't. After this they talked a lot about how to use the website and we also watched a video on how to use the website. Once they had explained this they told us that we would be going around the whole school and showing them how to use the website as well as it is quite complicated. My goal for next time is to not fiddle through the talking and just sit and listen. I also still need to go and ask Mrs Ward for my barcode number as this is how I get into my account. The care value that I showed this week was showing respect to others as I tried my best to sit and listen through the whole presentation and I also contributed to the discussions we had.

Kapa Haka - Excellence Can Do #13

Kapa Haka - On Friday the year 4 - 8 students had kapa haka. As soon as the teachers let the year 7/8 students out of class I headed over to the hall foyer. Once I got there I realised that I ahd forgotten my long pois. I ran back to class and grabbed them out of my bag after that I ran to the hall foyer and took my shoes off. I arrived in my line late because of this but it didn't matter too much as they hadn't started yet. Once I was sitting down in my line matua Rhihari started us off with Pa Mai. Whilst we were half way through this song Mr Brown and Mrs Baker came in and started listening to us. After this Mr Brown took over and said that the non performance kapa haka could leave. Once they had left  Mr Brown told us to start on our performance routine. Our first song in our performance routine is Hareruia. This is my favourite song as I really like the lyrics to it. After Hareruia our next song is Tahurihuri. In this song the year 8's get to do long poi and the other girls get to do short poi. Once we finished this we went into our last song which is Tai Tapu (our school song). In this song everyone has actions that they are meant to do and at the end of this song we split off and do the haka. Once we had been through this routine twice Mr Brown and Mrs Baker stopped us as they didn't think that we were doing a very good job and said that we had to lift our volume. After they had said this we all started to lift our volume and they said it sounded great! I think that I showed the care value of trying your best because once the teachers had asked us to lift our volume I did and I keep lifting it throughout the whole song.

Evaluating Author's purpose

In reading we have been learning to make decisions about the usefulness of the text for the purpose, by using a variety of criteria to evaluate.

We read a range of texts and  evaluated them against four key criteria.
These were:
  • Readability
  • Accuracy
  • Relevance
  • Quality of information/ language.

Here is my evidence to show that I am able to demonstrate this reading skill. Evaluating Authors Purpose

My Care Progress.

I have done a check of my Care progress so far this year.

I am proud of my progress as I have nearly achieved my Bronze and am now working towards my Silver.

I have nearly achieved my Bronze and only need a couple more ticks until I do.

The area of CARE that I need to try harder in is Active Thinking because I don't contibute to class discussions as much as I could.

To achieve my Bronze award quicker I need to focus on a certain area in my Care chart and work really hard on getting those ticks.

The one thing that I can do to improve my progress in Care is to focus on a certain area in my Care chart and work really hard on getting those ticks.
